How to read
Lire /liʁ/ · verbe
« Je lis tous les soirs. »
You've just looked up your first word. In a book, press and hold a sentence to get its analysis.
Lire offers public-domain books read aloud, with the book’s own text following the reading sentence by sentence.
Choosing a book
Each book shows an indicative level (A2+, B1, B2…) estimated from sentence length and vocabulary. Books are listed from the easiest to the hardest: start with the first one.
Listening and reading
Tap ▶: the sentence being read is highlighted, and inside it, the word being read. Tap a sentence to go on reading from it.
⏮ and ⏭ go to the previous or next sentence; ⏮ first reads the current sentence again from its start. The three-line button, right of the player, lists the parts of the chapter. The speed is behind the slider button, left of the player (“Settings”).
Page by page or without pauses
In “Page by page”, the reading stops at the end of each page so that you can read it again; ▶ goes on to the next page. In “Without pauses”, the page turns with the reading.
Choose with the slider button, left of the player (“Settings”); the choice is kept on this device. To turn the page by hand, swipe left or right, or tap ‹ and › around the page number.
Translation and explanations
Press and hold a sentence for half a second: the translation, one or two grammar points, the hard words and the idioms — in English, Russian or Spanish, the language chosen in the player’s “Settings” → “Profile”.
The translation stays blurred until you tap it: try to understand first. Analyses per day are limited; sentences already analysed stay available.
Signing in
Sign in with the e-mail address of your invitation: you receive a 6-digit code, no password. It gives the sentence explanations and keeps your reading across your devices.
Picking up your reading
The home page offers “Continue reading”; in a chapter already started, “Resume at …” takes you back where you were. Signed in, this works from one device to another.
A mistake in the text?
In the analysis window of a sentence, “Report a mistake”: the text, the timing or the explanation. We correct the book and publish the chapter again.
